Protecting our precious environment and preserving our natural resources begin at home with our daily habits and consumptions.  By developing an awareness of our consumption and its consequential environmental impact, we can then take steps to reduce waste and pollution.  Our environmentally responsible actions will also serve as a model for our children, our friends and our neighbors, inspiring them to develop the same environmental awareness and responsibility.  As evident below, the need for environmental action could not be anymore urgent and alarming:

• United States consumes 100 billion plastic bags annually, which requires the use of 12 million barrels of oil.  (Worldwatch Institute)
• United States consumes 380 billion plastic bags, sacks and wraps annually.  (EPA)
• California disposes of 600 plastic bags per second.  (California Integrated Waste Management Board)
• Less than 5% of plastic bags are ever recycled.  (EPA)
• Less than 20% of paper bags are actually recycles.  (healthebay.org)
• Plastic bags don’t biodegrade, they photodegrade—breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits contaminating soil and waterways.  Plastic bags will take over 1,000 years to decompose.   
• Plastic bags wind up as litter and drift into trees, oceans and rivers where they are fatally ingested by sea animals, some of which are subsequently consumed by us.
